How hard is San Diego's water?
San Diego has some of the hardest municipal water in the country. Here's what that means, where it comes from, and what it does to your home.
If you've lived in San Diego for any length of time, you've probably noticed the white crust on your faucets, the spots on your glass shower doors, or the way soap doesn't quite lather the way it should. That's hard water — and San Diego's is among the hardest in the country.
What is water hardness?
Water hardness is a measure of dissolved calcium and magnesium in your water supply. It's typically expressed in parts per million (ppm) or grains per gallon (gpg). The higher the number, the harder the water.
Water above 180 ppm (10.5 grains per gallon) is classified as "very hard" — and essentially all of San Diego County sits in that band. For homes served by the City of San Diego, published figures span roughly 12.5–18 grains per gallon (about 215–285 ppm), varying by neighborhood, treatment plant, and the seasonal source blend. In North County, Olivenhain Municipal Water District publishes guidance of up to roughly 15 grains per gallon (about 250 ppm).

One honest caveat: hardness here is not one number. It depends on which agency serves your address and the seasonal blend of Colorado River water, State Water Project water, and desalinated seawater. The only way to know the figure at your tap is to measure it.
Where does the hardness come from?
Most of San Diego's water is imported. The two primary sources are:
The Colorado River — Water travels from the Rocky Mountains through hundreds of miles of desert terrain, picking up calcium, magnesium, and other dissolved minerals along the way. By the time it reaches San Diego via the Metropolitan Water District's aqueduct system, it's carrying a significant mineral load.
The State Water Project — Water from Northern California's Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta travels south through the California Aqueduct. This source is generally softer than Colorado River water, but the blend that arrives at your tap is still well above the "hard" threshold.
San Diego also draws from local reservoirs, but these account for a smaller percentage of the total supply and are themselves fed by runoff that picks up minerals from local geology.
What does hard water do in your home?
Hard water isn't a health concern — calcium and magnesium are minerals your body needs. But they create real problems for your plumbing, appliances, and daily comfort:
Scale buildup. Dissolved minerals precipitate out of hard water when it's heated, forming a chalky deposit called scale. You'll see it on faucets, showerheads, and inside your water heater. Over time, scale reduces the efficiency and lifespan of water-heating appliances.
Spots and film. Hard water leaves mineral deposits on glassware, shower doors, and fixtures. The white haze on your glass is evaporated mineral residue.
Soap performance. Hard water interferes with soap and detergent. You need more product to get the same lather, and soap scum builds up faster on surfaces and in your hair.
Skin and hair. Many San Diego residents notice that hard water leaves skin feeling dry and hair feeling dull or stiff after showering.
What can you do about it?
