Water filtration in Encinitas
Encinitas stretches along six miles of coastline from Leucadia in the north to Cardiff-by-the-Sea in the south, encompassing several distinct neighborhoods with their own character. The city of roughly 63,000 residents is served by the Olivenhain Municipal Water District and the San Dieguito Water District, both of which receive imported water from the San Diego County Water Authority. The water is treated at local facilities but retains the high mineral content characteristic of Colorado River supply.

Encinitas homeowners deal with significant scale buildup in tankless water heaters — a popular choice in the area's newer construction and remodels. The hard water also affects the community's many avid home gardeners, as dissolved minerals can accumulate in drip irrigation emitters and soaker hoses. Indoor fixtures show spotting and film, particularly on the dark stone countertops and matte-finish hardware popular in current Encinitas renovations.
Homes in Encinitas are largely served by the Olivenhain Municipal Water District, where published hardness figures run roughly 12–15 grains per gallon (about 205–250 ppm)— well into the “very hard” classification. The exact figure at your tap depends on your address and the time of year.

Scale buildup
Calcium and magnesium deposits accumulate on fixtures, inside pipes, and on heating elements. This reduces efficiency and shortens equipment lifespan.
Chlorine taste and odor
San Diego uses chloramines for disinfection. While effective for water safety, chloramines can leave a noticeable taste and odor in tap water.
Spots and film
Hard water leaves white spots on glassware, shower doors, and dark fixtures. The mineral residue requires frequent cleaning with specialized products.
Skin and hair effects
Many residents notice drier skin and less manageable hair when bathing in hard water. Softened water allows soap to rinse more completely.
The housing stock varies widely: vintage 1960s surf shacks in Leucadia, ranch-style homes on larger lots in Old Encinitas, newer planned developments inland, and custom coastal homes along Neptune Avenue.
