Water softener vs. whole-home filtration: what's the difference?

They're often confused, but water softeners and filtration systems do different things. Here's a clear breakdown of each, and when you might want both.

When people start looking into whole-home water treatment, two terms come up immediately: water softener and whole-home filtration system. They're often used interchangeably, but they solve different problems with different technologies.

What a water softener does

A water softener targets hardness minerals — specifically calcium and magnesium. It uses a process called ion exchange: water passes through a tank of resin beads that swap calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions. The result is "soft" water.
